What are the main causes of dark lips?
In some cases it may hereditary but in terms of lifestyle habits and choices, the most obvious culprit is smoking. The tar that is present in nicotine stains not only your lips but also the teeth and gum. Apart from causing dark lips, smoking harms the body and your looks in so many ways that it is shocking how so many people still continue this habit.
Drinking excessive amounts of tea or coffee, staying out for long durations in the sun, lack of moisturising and wrong make-up are some of the other reasons for dark lips. Along with this, itchiness and dryness can also accompany those who suffer from dark lips.
Below are some really useful methods to help you get rid of dark lips and bring about a more natural and healthy colour to your lips.
Stop Smoking – You don’t need to be a genius to know that smoking is harmful for you. Those that smoke, if you kick the habit, then within a short period of time you will see noticeable change to the colour of your lips. Trust me; smoking for long duration of time will really stain both your lips and teeth. There are no ifs or buts, kick the habit now and see noticeable results.
Sugar and Lemon – This is a very useful exfoliating home remedy that will help lighten dark lips. As you well know, lemon is a natural skin lightener, while sugar works to remove dead skin on your lips. Get half teaspoon of sugar (brown sugar may be better) and add a few drops of lemon. Mix this and gently scrub your lips in circular motion. Do this for about two to three minutes then wash off. Doing this regularly, will help bring back a natural fresh look and help reduce dark lips. Be careful not to rub too vigorously as you will rip the skin.
Almond Oil and Honey – Both these have so many benefits to your body that it is no surprise they also help in combating dark lips. Mix 1 teaspoon of almond oil and 1 teaspoon of honey together and apply it on your lips. Do this twice a day and you will see that not only will your lips get lighter but they will be softer as well. Almond oil, like lemon, helps to brighten the skin and gives it a glow while honey has many benefits such as anti-bacterial properties, it moisturises the skin and contains anti-oxidants.
Honey and Strawberry – Take 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 teaspoon of strawberry juice and apply this onto your lips. Leave it on for about 20 minutes then wash off. Strawberry has a natural bright red colour and will help lighten your lips.
Aloe Vera – This has so many benefits that the list is endless. Most obviously aloe vera is very effective in acne but when it comes to dark lips; it also helps tackle this problem as well. Apply aloe vera on your lips at night time and leave it on for about 20 minutes. Over time the dark pigments on your lips will disappear. Not only this, but aloe vera is a wonderful remedy for cuts or scars on your lips as well.
Drink water – As you know, we need to drink water in order to stop our body from dehydrating. Sometimes, the cause of dark, rough lips is simply a lack of water.
Scrub and moisturise – Along with washing your face, remember to also scrub your lips. By doing this gently you will remove dead skin cells and allow newer cells to appear. That way your lips will always look fresh. Furthermore, both in extreme hot and cold weather make sure to get a good lip cream. The lip cream will protect your lips and help to keep it moisturised. Try to get one that has SPF. Your local Boots, Superdrug or John Lewis store will have a range of creams to help with dark lips.
