Face Scrub and the importance of Exfoliating

A good skin care regime involves washing your face daily and moisturising. However, these are just the basics. Using a face scrub will really take your skin to the next level. It will help the skin to look and feel healthy by getting rid of dirt and giving a much brighter and radiant complexion.

Face scrubs exfoliate the skin. They work by removing blackheads and dead skin. The outer layer which is most exposed, goes through a lot of abuse. Regular use of a face scrub helps remove dead skin and brings new skin to the surface. The new layer is smoother and better looking.

Isn't using a cleanser enough?

Of course it is important to use a cleanser daily. It gets rid of dirt and bacteria from the skin. However, a cleanser will not remove all the impurities. Therefore, we need a face scrub to give a more deep and thorough cleanse. Also as we age, our skin cell turnover cycle slows down. Exfoliating with a face scrub increases the cell turnover rate and allows better blood flow – result – much younger looking skin.

How often should you use a face scrub?

People often make the mistake of not knowing how often to use a product. In regard to using a face scrub; you can do this about 2 to 3 times a week depending on your skin type and condition. People with oily skin for example can get away with using a face scrub 2 to 3 times a week. However, those with dry skin should probably exfoliate only once a week. Excessive use will actually harm the skin rather than improve it. The skin will dry out, because the natural oil that it produces will be stripped away and the skin will become 'flaky'.

How to use?
Face scrub and the importance of exfoliating
The way to optimise its effect is to first wash the face with a cleanser. After this, you should apply the face scrub. Be sure to avoid the eye area. The skin is too delicate for this procedure. When applying, gently rub the the product in a circular motion. On the forehead and nose area you may rub a little hard. However do not apply too much pressure as this will damage the skin.

Applying it in this method will help remove the dead skin on the surface. It will also help get rid of blackheads and even out rough skin. For better results you may wish to steam your face. This will open up the pores and allow the ingredients to fully penetrate much deeper into the skin. Leave the product on your face for at least a few minutes. Then wash it off with warm water and apply your favourite moisturiser. If you regularly do this, your skin will look and feel much smoother and it will have a healthy glow.

There are so many face scrub products on the market, so which one do you go for? To start off with, face scrubs fall into a few categories. I will just talk about the two most common ones. You have cream based products. These are more suited for people with normal to dry skin. On the other hand, you have gel based exfoliators. These are designed for oily to combination skin. Just bear this in mind the next time you go out to purchase a face scrub.
